What are the necessary steps to take to prep hardwood floors before refinishing?

More specifically, do I need to actually clean the floor before starting any kind of refinishing/resurfacing?

You want to do this right the first time. It’s a big job! First you will need to remove all foot boards and heating grates and reset any nails that have raised over the years. Next, sand the floors to give it some tooth. If you are going to re stain you need to go all the way to the bare wood. (rent a floor sander it will save you time and be a lot easier on your back.) The most important part is to get all the dust up after sanding. I suggest, first vacuum with an upright then go back in with an attachment with a brush and scrub the brush into the grooves between all the boards where an accumulation of dust will hide. Leave the room for 30 minutes to let all the dust that’s been stirred up from the vacuum, settle. Then go over the entire floor with a tack cloth. I know it’s a lot of prep, but the end result will be well worth the extra prep. If you have the extra money, hire the pros. Oh and use large sheets of plastic to cover door ways to contain the dust another step that is well worth the extra time.
You should SAND the floor before refinishing. You want to rough up the existing polyurethane to give the new coat something to "grab".
Although, if you are looking to change the color, you must first remove all of the existing poly before you do so.
Do not use a water-based poly for floors. It is not as durable as oil and will wear MUCH faster.
Sand your floor, and make sure you remove all of the dust before applying any finish.
You should do more research. If you just want to put on a new couple coats of clear, then you just need to sand per instructions of product you choose to use. If you want to change color, it needs to go all the way back down to bare wood, and that I would hire a contractor to do. Just cleaning a floor can also screw things up if not done properly.
When used with hardwood flooring the term refinishing includes a sanding or giving a tooth to the floor before applying any kind of sealer. You don’t have to clean the floor but you should inspect every inch of the floor to assure that any nails used in the floor are driven below the surface with a nail set. Often you will need to remove the shoe mold along the baseboard. Make sure that you cover the heat vents and cold air returns with a small furnace filter or a piece of cheese cloth blue taped onto the register.
When I become rich, I will go to the timberland boots outlet to choose the timberland boots to wear. When I try these timberland boots on, I will become fashion.
Hmm is anyone else having problems with the pictures on this blog loading? I’m trying to find out if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
