Hardwood Floor Refinishing DIY Tips

Pay a visit to your nearest Home Depot or Lowes. The nice folks there can give you instructions, and sell you the products to do it. There are some really good floor refinishing products out there that are just made for Do-It-Yourselfers, like us.
My name is Andre and I am a floor covering contractor. I’m telling you from years of experience PLEASE DON’T try to do it yourself. yes, paying a contractor to do it sucks but if you try to do it yourself you could wind up paying even more for a professional to fix it.
Rent a floor sander and a edger sander, it is messy and the sander is heavy, once you have sanded be sure to clean up all dust, if you want to stain the floor choose the satin and apply and wipe off excess, follow manufactures time for drying. The best way to spread the poly if is is a large area is with a large area poly applicator, check with Lowes, Home Depot or Menards. It may take more than one coat for a durable finish.
Go to a rental place and get an orbital sander and start to work! We couldn’t find the orbital type so we had to use a regular belt floor sander. Still works but I hear the other are better because they don’t leave signs where you start and stop. After sanding all the old finish off, clean the floors with a tack cloth (hardware store) (VERY important step) and apply polyurethane with a lamb’s wool finishing mop ( hardware store). Be liberal with the finish and don’t mop it in like you would if you were mopping the floor.Just go over it and spread it around. Be prepared for a dusty mess but it’s really worth it when you are done. After it drys all you do to clean it is go over with damp mop or vinegar water.
There are some jobs that are really geared for do it yourselfers. Reworking a damaged wood flooring is not one of them. That is a particular skill that is earned, not bought off the shelf. I have new wood flooring. When the time comes, I will use the yellow pages. I have asked about this for my own benefit from people I know. Almost 100% of the time the answer given to me was hire a professional. I think you should do likewise.
The only do it yourself fix I would recommend is a wax stripper and fresh wax or other maintenance type finish. I would not recommend using a chemical paint remover type stripper. Period! Nor would I recommend a do it yourself sanding job. It takes a lot of skill and experience to not ruin a floor by sanding. Also there are many types of wood floors out there these days, many of which can’t be sanded like the old solid wood floors could be. My best advise is consult a professional.
Sometimes it is possible to do a light surface sanding and add a fresh finish coat. This could be a possible do it your- selfer, but I would still consult a professional. Even with this, it is crucial to know what the original finish was. Sometimes this is difficult even for the pro’s to determine for sure.
If you are a handy do it yourselfer there is no reason why you cannot do it yourself. I refinished my hardwood floors twice. I don’t do this for a living but it was EASY, just make sure you do everything properly and don’t force it to dry to fast or your finished product may make you realize you did all that hard work for nothing. My whole family is full of carpenters and we do everything ourselves, if you use some common sense and the right tools you can do anything…..we just don’t stucco or do electical lol. Sand the old finish off, stain and apply whatever finish you choose(I use the oil mod.urethane)..the internet is a great tool, you can research the products you may want to use or why you should use this or that. And remember keep the area clean and all surrounding areas, hair travels fast especially when you have dogs and it is not fun picking hair out of the floor and making a mess of your hands. Good luck
I forgot to add if you have gaps or squeaking it is best to address it all now!! Both are simple to do. I suggest you reasearch this on the internet to, not to sure how detailed it may get but it is all pretty easy like I said, don’t stress.
Yes, we can do it. I have nice experience of doing it, just you need to use best and eco friendly chemicals i.e. wood floor cleaning products. I used to take them from http://weloveyourfloors.com/ Hope you will also enjoy clean floors.
